Getting all charged up about the Chevy Volt? So is GM.
"General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz told an industry gathering this morning that the auto maker will partner with A123 Systems Inc. to develop a lithium-ion battery for the Volt," sharon Terlep of the Detroit News reported.
The strategic partnership between the General and the relative unknown lithium ion battery manufacturer is expected to kick the popular electric car concept's implementation plans into overdrive.
According to A123 systems:
"The contract calls for A123Systems, of Watertown, Mass., to develop battery cells to meet the specific requirements of GM's E-Flex system. A123Systems is considered a forerunner in the development of nanophosphate-based cell technology, which, compared to other lithium-ion battery chemistries, provides higher power output, longer life and safer operations over the life of the battery," the company stated in a press release.
Since the last Detroit Auto Show, there's been much hype and speculation surrounding the question as to whether the Volt was just green pie-in-the-sky hype or whether the car will actually see America's roads in a few years.
It seems as though the latter is proving more true.
