BMW 1-Series To Emigrate To The States

Those who may recall BMW's first bid to introduce a sub-$20K hatchback model to the United States will remember the early 90's 318ti as an unmitigated disaster. Precious few bought the car, even fewer held onto it for long after they did.

And who could blame them? Considering that a demo used 318i sedan could be had for similar green, the economics and most crucially the marketing of the whole scheme just didn't fly.

Well, 'round two, say the folks from Munich. This time, the Blue Roundel will foist its entry level machine onto the Americans but not in the hatchback form with which Europeans will become familiar in the 2008 model year, but rather in fast-back coupé and convertible layouts which may prove more palatable to the American consumer. At least that's what BMW's board hopes.
