Back to the Future for Pontiac?

When I got my first job in the auto industry I was required to promote the advantages of a rear-mounted engine. Working for Volkswagen, that wasn't difficult. Later, as a car magazine editor, I became bullish about front-wheel-drive with a transverse engine: Better traction in snow, more room for passengers and cargo, no gearbox and driveshaft intruding on the interior. To this day I favour front-wheel-drive for all but pure sports cars, where such things are irrelevant. So I find myself mystified by the current push by GM and Chrysler to turn the clock back by putting the engine in front and driving wheels at the back. GM? Well, Cadillac's gone to rear-drive and now a story in "Autoweek" suggests that Pontiac is possibly heading that way, although the transition will take 5 years. The ailing division made a decision in the 1980's to ape BMW but it hasn't worked and I doubt if it will this time. Far better to get out of the minivan/SUV game and focus on high-quality mid-price sedans.

Niche appeal. The market has become so competitive that the automakers are looking at niche buyers to make profits.
