Arizona Readies for Collector Car Extravaganza
Filed in archive on January 7, 2006

With all the hoopla surrounding the auto shows in LA and Detroit, it is incumbent on me, as your classic cars reporter, to remind you of an upcoming "show" that dwarfs them both. I'm referring to the incredible collector car auctions in Scottsdale, AZ, the week of January 16th.
Actually, it's more of a circus, but don't let that deter you, for you'll see more magnificent old cars in one place at one time than anywhere in the world.
The primary event, the one that gets most attention and is covered live by Speed Channel (with endless reruns all year long), is the Barrett-Jackson auction. The variety runs from ordinary 60's cars through rare classics and this year will feature several concept cars, including GM's extraordinary Futureliner bus (above right). Big as it is, Barrett-Jackson is but one of several events occurring during the week. RM Auctions, a Canadian firm that specialises in rare and exotic vehicles and also performs restorations, will hold an exclusive auction at the Arizona Biltmore, this year offering a James Bond Aston-Martin, al capone's 32 Cadillac, and Hank Williams Jr.'s custom Bonneville. Yet another major event, the Russo & Steele auction, takes place over three days and features European Sports Cars, American Muscle Cars, Hot Rods and Customs.
I'll be there for all the fun and outrageous bids and celebrity-watching, and promise to keep you posted.
