The car broke down.
Gotta love the E30 chassis M3 - perhaps the most hard-tuned, sport focused 3-Series ever built (every subsequent 3 has tipped the balance more and more towards luxury).
Technical point: the announcer suggests that at one point during the chase, the M3 attained 150 mph. While this is possible, according to BMW World that generation M was good for 143 mph tops. And this was filmed in flat Kansas...
Still, in this chase the larger Chevy LT1 Camaro powered with a thundering great V8 churning out at least 30% more horses than the bimmer was still no match the little Teuton. This clip provides further evidence that in the world of hot pursuit, lighter is better and handling counts more than horsepower.
