10 MPH Drop in Speed Saves Fuel

Highway Speeds

While listening to Car Talk on the weekend I heard hosts Tom and Ray Magliozzi advise a caller to stop driving at 75 mph. They assured the lady that reducing her average highway speed by just 10 mph could save an inordinate amount of fuel, well worth the inconvenience of arriving a few minutes later. It's true… the faster you go the more fuel you'll use (as any race driver will confirm) so why shouldn't we all slow down that extra little bit? I'm not suggesting a return of the 55 mph limit but I'm concerned about a plan in Texas to raise the speed limit to 80, and dismayed by the continuing rush to more power by the auto manufacturers. A little sacrifice in speed by drivers and carmakers could go a long way to alleviate the pain of high fuel costs while helping reduce demand for imported oil. Photo: Gribblenation

Have you ever driven in Texas? Going 80 IS slowing down for them. Sweet Jesus. I’ve never been in more fear of my life driving than when i was in Dallas.

Besides, isn’t gas cheaper in Texas than the rest of the U.S.?
